Like many book artists, Lizanne van Essen works in mixed media. She calls her work "Images to delight the eye and provoke thought, reflecting the positive in life." And they are absolutely delightful and thought-provoking. Her work is a joyful mix of color and form, paper engineering, book art, painting, collage, illustration and abstraction. In addition topaper, she works in textiles, making beautiful quilted images. It's her books I was most attracted to, because they push the definition of what a book is. Her book "Ripples" (right; click for a larger picture) doesn't exactly illustrate or tell a story—or does it? If you look at it closely, there's obviously something going on, but it's not dramatic. It's the calm depiction of gentle movement, a bit like watching a Cezanne painting come to life. Something you could sit and stare at all day. Makes me happy!
